This week’s Apprentice ended with a stumble on the finish line for Duane, writes Farah Dib

With Jane out of the picture, sobbing in the horizon while ensuring Lord Sugar that he’s really missing out, the show is on the lookout for a new villain. And it’s hard to imagine anyone more suitable than testosterone-ridden Ricky “Witness the Fitness” Martin, this week’s losing team leader.

Video tasks are always a pain. They leave too much to the creative imagination of the contestants (remember Pants Man? Ah, sorry: you were trying to forget him…). And with most of the paint-by-numbers candidates being less creative than office chairs, most tasks soon descend into the primitive.

Yet the tone was below average, even by Apprentice standards. Azhar took the prize for most uncomfortable face while doing the “funky squat” dressed in red hot pants surrounded by dancing girls in neon leggings. And Karen looked painfully awkward watching the guys eyeing up the girls doing the hula-hoop on the dance floor. I sensed a lot of embarrassment in the boardroom.

There was more evidence the Apprentice is a work of fantasy when the John Travolta-inspired lunatic flash(er)dance “convinced” Virgin Active that this could be suitable for their family market and saved Adam’s team from having to defend themselves in the boardroom. Virgin Active should perhaps re-evaluate who they put in charge of their family-friendly marketing. This was not meant for children’s eyes.

Ricky’s camouflaged boxercise class was actually a more feasible idea, with Laura instructing a bunch of super-fit martial art dancers, but lacked originality. Duane was the fall guy on a technical knockout. Ugh. Frustrating. The wrong team lost the task and one of the more capable candidates was fired, all while Adam got away with being the ‘choreographer’ of the seediest video since Borat. The only good thing is that Ricky Martin will continue to lead pitches starting with ‘Hi, my name is Ricky Martin’ on telly for at least one more week.
